Angus is an experienced regulatory and sustainability lawyer who specialises in environmental regulation. His practice covers all aspects of environmental regulation from contaminated land to waste, climate change, renewables, nuisance, water pollution and asbestos. He also has expertise in related areas such as energy, planning and health & safety. He advises developers and operators of, and investors in, infrastructure, real estate and other businesses on transactional, regulatory and contentious issues, regularly working alongside corporate, real estate, commercial, projects and EU/competition teams.
Angus’s recent experience includes:
- providing environmental advice on the US$1 billion sale of an international construction chemicals business
- advising a motorway service area (MSA) developer and operator on the acquisition and development of a new MSA on land formerly owned by a waste management business and adjacent to a closed landfill site
- advising an international chemicals business on the environmental aspects of the corporate restructuring of its UK business, including managing the transfer of the environmental permits for its UK sites to different group companies
- advising a new company offering swappable electric vehicle batteries as a service to large fleet operators (such as parcel delivery businesses) to extend the range of their electric vehicles on environmental regulatory issues arising from their proposed new business
- advising a major real estate business on its mandatory ESG reporting obligations in the UK and the EU, including Streamlined Energy & Carbon Reporting (SECR), the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS), the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD)
Angus has led Shoosmiths’ environmental practice since 2016. He is one of the Convenors of the UK Environmental Law Association’s (UKELA) Waste Group and a former Co-Chair of UKELA's Governance & Devolution Group.
